The tools that made me.... 2024:
I have a background in corporate, government and marketing video production and photography. A few years back, I came to the realization that I don’t have work that is truly just mine. Since then, I have tried to find my style and create unique bodies of work that exist separate from the entities that employ me. I have created more traditional bodies of work that revolve around small town community life and other relatable topics. In terms of my media creation skillset, I often claim to be the best jack of many trades in the deck. In an attempt to experiment and hopefully add to my skill set, I set out to create a body of work utilizing a light painting method. In this experimental body of work, I set out to depict hand tools and various other tools of the trades used by my father and grandfather. Both being lifelong tradesmen, the sturdiest of the tools have decades of life, grit and texture worked into them. While being relatively new to light painting, I was excited to explore this methodology. Seeking inspiration from famous light painter Harold Ross, I worked to create a unique but effective workflow. These images were taken in complete darkness. Using various constant light sources and custom modifiers, I artistically carved out the texture and grit of the tools that supported me and raised me into adulthood and allowed me to grow into this visual storytelling trade.
